What are the responsibilities of an educated person? (University of Puget Sound)

With the opportunity to learn and be educated, there come certain responsibilities. One is to create a difference for the people around you. Since you are educated you will have a better job, better standard of living than many around you. If you have enough for yourself and a little extra you should use that money to help the people around you. Maybe there is a family next door having a hard time paying their bills, or maybe there is an old man who has needs a check up but doesn't have the money to go for that check up. You need to be the one helping the helpless and being their for the lonely. You need to be able to tell the right from the wrong. To stand up for what is right. If a person is getting bullied on the side of the road, you should be the one going out of your way to stop the fight. Though your life maybe busy with your new job, and family you may not have time to do little things that change other people's lives. However, you need to make the time for these little changes to take place. You need to be the one keeping the roads clean. If people throw trash, you need to be the one telling them to stop. You need to be the one to tell a police officer not to take a bribe. You need to be the one following the laws of the country, because you can read them, and there is no reason for you not to be follow them. For if you do follow the laws, you will be a role model for many. People will look up to you not just because you are educated but also because you follow what is required of every person.

  1. What I really like about this blog post is your examples. They are specific and realistic and very well explained. Other than a few grammatical errors, like "may be" instead of "maybe," I think it's great!

  2. I do agree that an educated person has many responsibilites, but the responsibilites that you have listed, don't you think they apply for everyone?
I do think with education you have a better understanding of things, at least trying to change something should be required but to have enough time for your self/ family is important as well. To think about the opportunity cost is important on who to help and what to change.

  3. i agree that educated people should help the less unfortunate.
Uneducated people look up to educated people for advise and guidance.
Education is much more the just knowing a few things. It is about using the knowledge for the betterment of the world.
Your ideas are very altruistic and I hope you are able to help people when you grow up.

  4. Your points are valid, of course (whether or not I adhere to some of them...), but you sound slightly accusatory. Which is fine, but I think you really mean what you say, and you seem to want to pass on a message - if you want to provoke people into acting the way you ask them to, I think another pronoun could convey your point equally well, as well as more positively. You could use "we" instead of you - actually, it might be even better if you use "I." You make it a story about what you yourself plan to do, how you think you ought to behave, all of which will imply that all educated people should do the same.

You could make a few points about what an educated person knows that an uneducated person might not. Being moral and a good citizen doesn't necessarily apply to only the educated class, but spreading awareness might. You might also want to highlight a few benefits involved with fulfilling the responsibilities of an educated person, just to enrich the essay. They don't necessarily have to be materialistic - you could talk about the satisfaction, the pride you feel in yourself after you've done what you know that you, as an educated person, should do for society.
